Bio Computer Grows Wheatgrass Out the Top, Really Works

It’s a desktop computer that also happens to have a bed of wheatgrass sprouting out the top of it. I guess that’s one way to bring something natural into the world of tech.

The offer was to designate 10% of the natural gas that I use in my home as renewable natural gas. That got me thinking: what is renewable natural gas?

Mercado: A Much More Organized Reusable Shopping Bag

Michael Kwan / May 10th 2012 / No Comments

Here in Vancouver, most supermarkets now charge you for those plastic grocery bags, so an increasing number of people have started to bring their own reusable bags. That’s great for the environment, but many of these reusable grocery bags leave something to be desired. They’re just one massive pocket, letting your tomatoes get squished and your eggs get cracked.

Over on Quirky, a new kind of reusable shopping bag has been created and it’s called the Mercado. Rather than being just one large pouch with a shoulder strap, the Mercado comes with several pockets of different sizes to help you organize and protect your produce. What this means is that all your canned stuff can go in one place, your delicate fruit in another place, and your tub of yogurt in yet another place.

In all, there are four small interior pockets for more fragile items, two medium interior pockets, one large interior compartment with two elastic loops for holding bottles (smart!), and two small exterior pockets for easily accessible items. Yes, it’s “just” a shopping bag–they call it a “Farmer’s Market Bag”–but just as you want compartments in your laptop bag or backpack, the same makes just as much sense when you hit up your local grocery store. The Mercado sells for $24.99.

Bob Lutz vs. Neil deGrasse Tyson on Global Warming (Video)

Michael Kwan / May 5th 2012 / No Comments

Global warming is quite a controversial topic, with scientists debating both sides equally well.  Whatever you call it, the impact of human civilization has been quite profound. Former General Motors CEO Bob Lutz is not a scientist, but he does have some strong opinions on the matter.

This segment from the Bill Maher show where Bob Lutz engages in a debate with renowned astrophysicist and overall badass Neil deGrasse Tyson. Whereas the scientist sides with the general consensus among the scientific community that the Earth’s climate systems are changing, Lutz disagrees.

He says that many of the predictions put forth by the “global warming” or “climate change” community haven’t come to pass. Neil deGrasse Tyson, on the other hand, brings up the changes in the migratory patterns of animals and the distribution of certain plants as evidence of a changing planetary climate. It’s pretty clear who Maher agrees with.

I’m not sure if this will help the carbon footprint of hybrids, but I imagine not having to ship all those cars over from Japan couldn’t hurt. It is now being proposed that the Toyota Prius will be built in the United States for American customers and this could start with the 2016 model.

Moss-Powered Biophotovoltaic Table Generates Electricity

Here’s a fascinating little idea. You get a table where the top is littered with a series of moss-filled jars. The moss goes through its usual photosynthesis process and the energy is then tapped and converted into usable electricity. The conductive fibers inside the moss table are able to capture the energy being generated, converting the chemical...

Sainsbury’s, a UK supermarket chain, is trying to make a big change in carbon emissions by simply shrinking the inner diameter of their rolls of toilet paper. The chain plans to cut carbon emissions created from transporting more bulky, traditionally sized toilet rolls by the simple act alone.

Adya Sues The Raw Food World for Discontinuing Sales of ‘Battery Acid’ Adya Clarity Products

I stopped supplementing with vitamins over a year ago. My intuition told me that I would be better off eating whole raw foods with a wide spectrum of nutrients and to eat as much organic as possible. Rather than spending several hundred dollars per month on over processed, extracted vitamins and minerals which ingredients are nearly impossible to determine...
